Caņo Negro National Wildlife Refuge sprawls over nearly 25,000 acres
of humid rain forest just out of Los Chiles, in the northern zone of
Costa Rica. Caņo Negro is a virtual water wonderland of birds, wildlife
and tropical flora.
Declared a refuge in 1984, the Caņo Negro region hosts such tropical species as
the green heron, least bittern, purple gallinule, northern jacana, parrots,
toucans, oropendulas along with many other migratory birds.
Nearly 350 different species of birds, a third of the nesting birds in North America,
reach Costa Rica each year. Some make it their winter residence, while
others simply pass through on their way to South America.
Caņo Negro is proud to offer the best fresh water fishing with over 200 lb.
Tarpon, 25 to 40 lb Snook along with Guapote (Rainbow Bass) which are large
and plentiful. Guided fishing tours are available upon request.
